Frequently asked questions

UTM parameters are tags added to a URL that tell Google Analytics (or other analytics tools) where your traffic comes from. The name comes from Urchin Tracking Module — Urchin was the software Google acquired to build Google Analytics. When someone clicks a UTM-tagged link, the analytics platform reads the tags and records the source, medium and campaign name of that visit.

  • utm_source — who sent the traffic: google, facebook, newsletter, bing.
  • utm_medium — the marketing channel: cpc, email, social, banner, organic.
  • utm_campaign — the specific campaign name: summer_sale, product_launch, black_friday_2025.
Think of it as: source is the newspaper, medium is the type of ad (print, online), and campaign is the specific ad you ran.

utm_term is designed for paid search campaigns. It identifies the keyword that triggered the ad — for example running+shoes or best+crm+software. Most teams only use it for Google Ads.

utm_content is useful for A/B testing or when you have multiple links pointing to the same page. For example, if you have a banner and a text link in the same email, use banner_top and text_link to see which one performs better.

When you place a UTM link in a physical medium — a poster, a flyer, a printed magazine ad, or a product package — a QR code is the only way a visitor can realistically click it. The QR code encodes the full UTM URL, so every scan is tracked in your analytics just like a regular click. Download it as PNG and embed it in your print materials or digital banners.

  • Always use lowercase — UTM parameters are case-sensitive. Google and google will appear as two different sources in your reports.
  • Use underscores instead of spaces or hyphens in campaign names for consistency.
  • Be consistent with naming conventions across your team (e.g., always email not sometimes e-mail or mail).
  • Never use UTM tags on internal links — they will overwrite the original traffic source in your analytics.
  • Keep a shared spreadsheet to document all your UTM combinations.

Digital marketing specialists use it daily to correctly tag every campaign link before distributing it via email, social media, ads, or print materials — ensuring that data in Google Analytics or GA4 is accurate and comparable. Web and data analysts use it to make sure all parameters follow a consistent naming convention, which is essential so that reports do not fragment into dozens of variants of the same source. PPC and SEM managers consult it to build destination URLs for their Google Ads or Meta Ads campaigns with the correct medium and campaign parameters. Email marketing managers use it to distinguish in Analytics which clicks come from specific newsletters versus transactional emails. Digital agencies and consultancies use it as an onboarding tool to standardise UTM naming conventions across all their clients.
